Organic Farming Advocate Renato A. Belen with the leadership of BJMP District Jail in San Pablo City led by Sr. Insp. Arvin T. Abastillas. |
San Pablo City - To provide know-how for additional livelihood activities to the inmates at the San Pablo City District Jail of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), jail personnel headed by J/SInsp. Arvin T. Abastillas, District Jail Warden, underwent a Seminar on Vermiculture last February 17 at Ato Belen’s Farm and Nursey at Barangay San Juan, this city. Jail Officers J/S Inspectors Adelaida Taburada, Jerome Soriano and Victor Manalo also attended the seminar.
Mr. Renato A. Belen, or Ma Ato, the Farm Owner, discussed the standard procedures in Vermiculture, or artificial rearing or cultivation of worms (Earthworms) and the technology or process of using worms for the betterment of human beings. The trainees were all given the opportunity to actually observe set-up for vermin-farming, as well as in the production of agricultural inputs, such as fish emulsion, lactobacilli, and organic fertilizer. They also learned more about organic farming..
According to Jail Warden Abastillas the information and technique they learned in vermiculture from ma Ato will be shared to the inmates, knowing that the technology can be an additional mean of livelihood to the inmates. Of course, inmates are also being trained on handicraft-making inside the jail.
Ma Ato added that Vermiculture is one of the best solution in addressing the current ecological problems including climate change and food security, since earthworms aerate, till and fertilize the soil, thus, improving the soil structure, nutrient and water holding qualities of soil.
