LAGUNA GRANDMASTER CAPTURES UAAP MVP

Laguna’s pride, John Paul Gomez of Biñan has been named UAAP University Athletics’ Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Athlete of the Year, adding one more to his long list of achievements.

Gomez, the multi-titled B.S Mechanical Engineering student from the De La Salle University (DLSU), was honored as the league's top athlete last March 12, 2009 during the Awards Night held at the Bahay ng Alumni inside the University of the Philippines (U.P) campus in Diliman, Quezon City. He won the award by edging out fellow Lasallian PJ Tierro of tennis, trackster Ben Alejandrino of UST, swimmer Luica Dacanay of UP, and ADMU cager Rabeh Al-Hussaini.

In this year’s UAAP season, Gomez was the lone bright spot for the DLSU Green Archers' solid fourth-place finish as he bagged his fifth straight Most Valuable Player for winning all five matches in Board 1. Although a big name already in the league, the 22-year-old Lagunense made a bigger name for himself last November 2008 when he clinched the GM (Chess Grandmaster) norm during the World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany. The feat also earned him a citation during last month's Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night. Just recently, he was chosen as one of this year’s Outstanding Youth of Laguna during the 5th Anilag or Ani ng Laguna Festival last Monday, March 9, 2009 at the Laguna Cultural Center in the capital town Sta. Cruz. As one of The Outstanding Youth of Laguna (TOYL) for 2009, Gomez was cited for excelling in sports being a role model to the Lagunense youth. (Cris Sanji)

Passed the BAR Examination in the State of New York, U. S. A.

Miss Philippines-USA 2004-2005, Barbara Jean Chumacera Apostol, 27, passed the New York State’s examination for admission to the BAR given on July 24-25, 2007 . She attained her law degree at Hofstra University School of Law in the State of New York where she graduated with honors last May 20, 2007 .
