Parts of Mt. Banahaw remain closed for tourists

MANILA, Philippines -- Some areas in Mount Banahaw remain “off limits” to visitors, including pilgrims, for another three years as these remain highly susceptible to various geological hazards.

According to Reynulfo Juan, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 4A Calabarzon OIC regional executive director, team of experts who recently conducted a study in Mount Banahaw to assess its biophysical and socio-cultural characteristics declared that trekking, camping and other outdoor activities in the “Holy Mountain” is dangerous because of the possibility of flash floods, landslide and mudslides.

Mount Banahaw was supposed to be opened to pilgrims, adventurous mountaineers, simple trekkers or mere kibitzers’ last January 29, after the lapse of an earlier resolution banning entry into some parts of the protected area.

Juan, concurrently the chairman of the Protected Areas and Management Board (PAMB) of the Mounts Banahaw and San Cristobal Protected Landscape (MBSCPL), said the PAMB passed Resolution 02-2012 on February 16, extending the ban of all activities for another three years.

Dr. Lope A. Calanog, head of the team for the DENR Ecosystem Research and Development Bureau which conducted the “carrying capacity and biodiversity study” with special focus on the vicinity of Barangay Kinabuhayan in Dolores revealed that Kinabuhayan is highly susceptible to landslide, erosion and flash flood.

The ban aims to limit human activity in the mountain. Over the years that it has been declared “off limits” to visitors, the overall condition of Mount Banahaw has shown remarkable improvements.

The team said Mount Banahaw needs more time for it to recuperate and completely recover from the stress it experienced for a long time.

“Off limits” areas start in Kinabuhayan toward the approach to Kristalino Falls to Dungaw, to Tatlong Tangke and back to Kinabuhayan on the Dolores side, Puesto Pagbuga in Barangay Bugon and Bagong Ilaya in Barangay Concepcion Pinagbakuran and Concepcion Banahaw on the Sariaya-side.

Calanog’s team also recommended a formulation and effective implementation of a “visitor management scheme” which would impose a regulated or “direct limit” of visitors at one time and restriction in specific areas such as use of the bathing, camping and worship areas.

300 dogs rescued as cops bust Korean dogfighting ring for second time

MANILA, Philippines - Police raided a dogfighting arena in San Pablo City, Laguna operated by the same Korean syndicate they had busted last December.

Six Koreans, Filipino caretakers and security guards were arrested during the Friday night raid in San Pablo.

Anna Cabrera, program director of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society, said about 300 pit bulls and pit bull mixes were rescued from the two-hectare lot where the dogfight ring is located.

However, around 20 dogs will have to be euthanized, she added.

"The same Koreans daw na nahuli sa (who were arrested in) December 2011 in the Indang, Cavite dogfight na nag-post lang ng (who had posted) bail. Malaki ang operasyon, may bago pang ring. Nakakaawa ang mga aso (This is a large operation, they even have a new ring. The dogs are really to be pitied)," Cabrera said.

"Kita ang ribs ng lahat ng aso (All the dogs had their ribs showing). (There is) no proper shelter. Walang tubig ‘yung iba. Nakakaawa (Some have no water. They are really pitiful). These Korean dogfighters need to be punished severely," Cabrera said.

She said the dogfight is part of an online gambling operation the Koreans run.

Cabrera urged the House of Representatives to pass House Bill 5849, which increases the penalties imposed on animal abusers.

Permit obtained for a 'farm'

According to Supt. Ferdinand de Castro, chief of the San Pablo City police, the operators of the dogfighting ring gained a permit from the village by stating that they were operating a "farm."

They have been occupying the two-hectare lot in Purok 3, Bgy. San Gregorio for about six months when residents noticed the number of dogs steadily rising.

Armed with a search warrant, police raided the area early Saturday morning and arrested at least two Koreans. These Koreans were believed to be the same ones arrested in December 2011 in a raid in Indang, Cavite.

Anna Cabrera of PAWS said some of the dogs were in very bad shape. About 20 have already been euthanized while others have died due to poor conditions.

CIVIL REGISTRATION MONTH IPINAGDIRIWANG NGAYONG PEBRERO

Ayon sa Artikulo 7 ng Convention on the Rights of the Child na inilathala ng United Nations at niratipika ng Pilipinas noong July 1990, “The child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name and the right to acquire a nationality…”

The Mayan Calendar did not predict the end of the world

Contrary to popular belief spawned by media and Hollywood, the Mayan’s Long Count Calendar does not predict the end of the world on Dec. 21, 2012.
What it predicts is the end of the fifth cycle of the earth’s 26,000-year history, which began in 3114 BC and will end on Dec. 21, 2012. The 26,000 years is divided into five earth cycles of about 5,126 years. The earth is now in its fifth and last cycle according to that calendar.
After Dec. 21, 2012, another earth cycle will commence. It says nothing about the world coming to an end. As Gerald Benedict pointed out in his book “The Mayan Prophecies for 2012,” “The prophecies are not of a terminal catastrophe, but of an evolving earth and of a spiritual evolution of the people.”
This event will be accompanied by great changes on earth in both the physical and spiritual planes as a result of the influence of planetary alignments and movements. On Dec. 21, 2012, it is predicted that six planets, including the sun and the moon, will be in complete alignment, going back to their original state 26,000 years ago. That’s why the calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012, and not because, according to one cartoon, the Mayans “ran out of stones to carve on.”
Already we have been seeing the effects of these earth changes predicted by the Mayan calendar, namely, more frequent natural calamities, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, strong floods in unusual places, hurricanes and typhoons, not to mention the depletion of the ozone layer, causing global warming that is melting several kilometers of polar glaciers more rapidly.
This is aggravated by the scientifically validated statement that the sun is getting warmer compared to previous decades. The Mayan Calendar predicted that there would be greater and more frequent solar flares or storms happening as the fifth earth cycle nears its end.
The Mayans are not alone in the dire predictions about the earth in the coming years, if not months. Edgar Cayce, Ruth Montgomery’s guides, Nostradamus, Zecharia Sitchin’s “Earth Chronicles,” The Hopi Indians, and the Revelations of St. John all point to the same or similar scenario. Only the Mayans predicted the exact date of earth’s ending cycle, but it did not predict the end of the world, but only the changes that will take place on that fateful date. The earth will survive these natural calamities, and so will majority of its population.
So, what can we earthlings do, assuming the Mayan calendar predictions are true? Nothing much physically, to be honest about it. The preparation must come primarily from within each and every one of us, not from without.
Open mind
As the entity, Ang Suh, from the upper fifth dimension, revealed to its channel, Dr. Helen de Garriz, very recently:
“Do not seek answers in the things you see; rather seek them from the heart and an open mind. It will be a very difficult phase, the first part of 2012, for the blending of the old mind and new spirit, and the shift from the third to the fourth dimension, will produce some resistance, causing a wave of confusion and frustration…
“Do not be afraid, for though the forces of Evil are strong in your sphere, it is still the Good that will triumph, for that is the natural order of things… Remember, you only need to be AWARE in order to survive.”
I have been asked what Ang Suh meant by such a seemingly vague statement. I may be wrong, but what I believe he and the other spirit entities have been pounding into our thick heads for thousands of years is that man must stop thinking of himself as a physical body having consciousness, but instead think of himself as consciousness (or spirit) having a body.
Once we truly realize and embrace the fact that we are primarily a spirit that possesses a physical body in order to function and develop on the earth plane, then there will be no more fear of what happens to the body, because the immortal spirit will remain alive forever!
As Ang Suh pointed out: “The separation of the Good and Evil, the Light and the Dark, shall no longer exist in the age of Conscious Awareness!”
Reactions of friends to whom I texted the Mayan calendar prophecies were as varied as can be expected.
Some, like graphic artist Kara Tolentino Prieto, got so terribly scared, according to her colleague and friend Lorraine Obusan, who, on the contrary, said she is excited and looking forward to it. Others like Sharon Tan, Gina de Venecia and Dr. Elaine Silva simply asked: “What can we do about it?”
