Woman found dead in Laguna

CAMP PACIANO RIZAL, Laguna, Philippines—A woman was found dead in a vacant lot in San Pablo City, Laguna, the police said Wednesday. Superintendent Ferdinand de Castro, San Pablo City police chief, identified the victim as Ariane Villamater, 25. In a phone interview, De Castro said Villamater was last seen Monday evening when she left their apartment in Green Valley Subdivision in Barangay San Francisco to buy load credits for her cell phone. At around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, a relative found the victim’s body dumped in a vacant lot inside the subdivision. De Castro said Villamater’s body bore bruises in the chest and head which may have been inflicted using a blunt object. He said the victim was also found naked, leading police to suspect she was raped. Villamater, a native of Antipolo City, had just moved to San Pablo City with her husband, a medical representative, on January 1. The First Lantern Festival in San Pablo City

For many San Pableño, the First Lantern Festival held at the SM City San Pablo last Sunday evening  was an experience particularly among young adults who came in with small pieces of paper where they wrote their wishes to be attached to the lantern that they entered in the festival, an event brought to the city by K. Gachitorena and Rachel Alvero that attracted not only photo enthusiasts from far and near, but but multitude of families from the city and adjacent municipalities. To many Asians, Lantern Festival is regarded as the Chinese version of Saint Valentine’s Day , for this is a celebration of love and affection among lovers as dictated by the Chinese tradition and culture. P900-M San Pablo loan stopped

SAN PEDRO, Laguna—The Court of Appeals has issued a writ of preliminary injunction that indefinitely suspends the release of the P900 million that the city government of San Pablo was borrowing from a private bank. The injunction, issued on Wednesday, came out after the 60-day temporary restraining order (TRO) earlier issued by the CA expired on Dec. 10. In a phone interview on Friday, lawyer Job Gesmundo said the injunction now prevented the city government and the Philippine Veterans’ Bank (PVB) from pursuing the  loan  transaction until the CA decides on the validity of the city ordinance that approved the P900 million loan. Gesmundo is the legal counsel of a group of San Pablo taxpayers that opposed the loan deal, which the city government in June entered into with the PVB. The city government said the amount would be used for the following projects and obligations: P140 million to pay for a previous loan, P200 million each for a multipurpose convention center and a touris...
