The Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development (PCAMRD) of the Department of Science and Technology is now calling for entries to the 2011 Aquatic Technology Competition and Marketplace (ATCOM). The ATCOM aims to promote the marketing/commercialization of technologies for the aquatic and marine resources sector according to Director Cesario R. Pagdilao.
Eligible technologies for the ATCOM are Science and Technology-based technologies ready for adoption in terms of replicability consisting of products, services and process. Director Pagdilao added that the competition is open to all Filipino citizens, whether they are from the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development System (NARRDS)-member-institutions, national centers, other State Colleges and Universities, private sector, or individuals. To qualify in the ATCOM, the following documents should be submitted: duly accomplished application form; endorsements from the agency head or his/her authorized representative (for government agencies and SCUs), the Zonal Center Coordinator, private sector (CEO/owner), and individual (personal endorsement); and manuscript (with full description of technology and business plan).
The prescribed outline of the application for the Aquatic Technology Commercialization (ATCOM I) includes: 1) Introduction (stating the rationale/significance of the technology and problems/issues being addressed), 2). Description of the technology (including the technical feasibility, economic viability – with economic analysis, social benefits/acceptability, environmental impacts, and creativity/innovativeness), current status/adoption of the technology, and level of adoption, 3) Limitation of the technology, and 4) References and other related works.
Director Pagdilao reminded that entries should be submitted to the concerned Zonal Center Coordinators (Zone I - Dr. Jinnie Mamhot; Zone II - Dr. Pablo Ocampo; Zone III - Dr. Leonor Santos; Zone IV – Dr. Jusie Roxas; and Zone V – Dr. Della Grace Bacaltos) of the zonal area where the applicant is from. Entries will be reviewed and endorsed by the Zonal Center Coordinator to the PCAMRD for inclusion in the competition. The submitted entries will be screened by the technical divisions of the PCAMRD -DOST and a board of judges composed of five experts, including a representative from the industry. The criteria for the selection of winners are commercializability, innovativeness, environmental impact, scientific content, and presentation.
Approved entries shall be presented at the AQUAMART for exhibition which is open to the public.
The Aquatic Technology Competition and Marketplace or ATCOM, launched in January 2006, is an annual competition held to showcase the technologies (products and services) generated by the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development System (NARRDS), a nationwide network composed of private and state universities and colleges, government agencies, and cooperating institutions being coordinated by PCAMRD. From thereon, the ATCOM has been a regular feature held during the two-day celebration of the PCAMRD’s Founding Anniversary in January of each year.
