NEW AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO THE PHILIPPINES

     President Barack Obama has named Harry K. Thomas Jr. as new Ambassador of the United States to the Philippines. He arraived in Manila last Saturday, April 10, 2010, and his arrival statements are quoted here.

     “Magandang gabi sa inyong lahat. I am delighted to be here to take up my responsibilities as the Ambassador of the United States to the Republic of the Philippines.  America and the Philippines are long-standing treaty partners, we are great friends, and we have much to do together. I look forward to working with the people of the Philippines and the people of America and to learn a lot about each other.

      “My father was here after World War II and he always told me what a great time he had with the people of the Philippines. I hope that I can live up to the work that he and his colleagues did here on behalf of the Philippines.

      “Thank you all very much. Maraming, maraming salamat sa inyong lahat”.
     Incidentally, Harry K. Thomas, Jr. is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and served most recently as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources. He previously served as a Special Assistant to the Secretary and Executive Secretary of the Department. Thomas, who joined the Foreign Service in 1984, served as U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh from 2003 to 2005. He also served in the White House as the Director for South Asia at the National Security Council from 2001 to 2002. His other postings include: New Delhi, India; Harare, Zimbabwe; Kaduna, Nigeria; and Lima, Peru. He has served as Senior Watch Officer, Deputy Director, and Director of the State Department Operations Center; Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs; and Staff Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for African Affairs. Passed the BAR Examination in the State of New York, U. S. A.

Miss Philippines-USA 2004-2005, Barbara Jean Chumacera Apostol, 27, passed the New York State’s examination for admission to the BAR given on July 24-25, 2007 . She attained her law degree at Hofstra University School of Law in the State of New York where she graduated with honors last May 20, 2007 . At Hofstra Law School , Barbara was the Vice President of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association and was appointed to the position of Diversity Affairs Coordinator by the president of the Student Bar Association. Ms. Apostol was a 2002 cum luade graduate of Boston College, one of the oldest Jesuit University in the United States with campus in Chestbut Hill, Massachusetts, where she majored in pre-law and communication studies.
