73-year-old village chief slain in Laguna ambush

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines—A 73-year-old barangay (village) captain was shot dead Monday morning by two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle in San Pablo City, Laguna, the police said.
Superintendent Ferdinand de Castro, San Pablo police chief, in a phone interview said Cesar Reyes, village chief of Barangay Sta. Isabel, was onboard his car going to city hall at around 10 a.m. when the assailants tailed him then shot him at close range along Azucena St. in Barangay IV-B.
Reyes, who suffered five bullet wounds in the head and body, was rushed by bystanders to the San Pablo City District Hospital where he died minutes later.
De Castro said they recovered bullets for a .45 cal. pistol at the crime scene.
Police said pursuit operations were ongoing but refused to discuss possible motive in the killing.
