Laguna micro-finance bank loses P1.1M to thieves

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna—Three gunmen on board a single motorcycle carted away P1.1 million in cash from an employee of a micro-financing bank in a daring highway robbery and hold-up in San Pablo City Monday afternoon, the police on Tuesday said.

Superintendent Ferdinand de Castro, city police chief, by phone said Melody Escorsa, the cashier of a Card Bank branch in San Pablo City, had just withdrawn the money from another bank and was with the driver Rofremel Tec aboard a Mitsubishi Adventure wagon in Barangay 7C at around 3:30 p.m. when they were stopped by the gunmen.

Investigation showed the gunmen first fired shots, hitting the windshield of the victims’ vehicle. Two of them then alighted from the motorcycle and at gunpoint took the black laptop case that contained the money from Escorsa.

No one was hurt in the robbery. The gunmen were able to escape onboard the motorcycle.
De Castro identified one of the suspects as a certain Mark Alabastro who was recently arrested but was released on bail over charges of robbery.

Police were investigating if the robbery was an inside job.
Early this month, a bank inside a mall in Dasmariñas, Cavite also lost at least P5 million cash to robbers.
