The United Nations General Assembly had come up with a Resolution (General Assembly Resolution A/64/267) designating October 20, 2010 as World Statistics Day. Inspired by the sincere efforts made in many countries in recent years to strengthen their statistical capacity, under the leadership of the national statistical office, in areas such as the population and housing censuses and the monitoring of Millennium Development Goal progress, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon signed a letter to all Heads of State/Government bringing to their attention the decision of the General Assembly to celebrate October 20, 2010 as World Statistics Day.
In his letter dated July 19, 2010, the Secretary-General made a strong statement in support of statistical work: “Let us make this historic World Statistics Day a success by acknowledging and celebrating the role of statistics in the social and economic development of our societies and by dedicating further effort and resources to strengthening national statistical capacity.”
The celebration of the World Statistics Day will acknowledge the service provided by the global statistical system at national and international level, and hope to help strengthen the awareness and trust of the public in official statistics. It serves as an advocacy tool to further support the work of statisticians across different settings, culture, and domains.
On World Statistics Day, activities at national level will highlight the role of official statistics and the many achievements of the national statistical system. Parallel to this activity, PSO Magdalena T. Serqueña of NSO-Laguna will spearhead the conduct of Seminar on Statistics and its Crucial Role in Governance. The topics to be presented are results from the surveys and censuses that were undertaken for Price Indices, Building Permits, Employment Statistics, Population and Housing Statistics and Vital Statistics. Also, the Key Features of NSO Website and the Demonstration on the Use of NSO Public Use Files and Reference Files will be provided in this seminar. The target participants shall come from the planning officers of LGUs and national agencies, academe, industry group and the provincial Local Civil Registrar group. (NSO-Laguna)
