AFA and PCAMRD To Conduct Summit Summit On Shellfishes

The Asian Fisheries Academy (AFA) and the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute of the Department of Agriculture headed by Dr. Westly R. Rosario, and the Philippine Council on Aquatic and Marine Research and Development (PCAMRD) of the Department of Science and Technology under the leadership of OIC Executive Director Cesar R. Pagdilao will conduct the 1st National Summit on the Culture and Processing of Shellfishes at the Asian Fisheries Academy at the NIFTDC-BFAR Complex in Bonuan-Binloc, Dagupan City on September 23-24, 2009. The summit theme is “Enriching Fisherfolks’ Live Through Culture and Processing of Shellfishes.”

Dr. Rosario said the aim of the summit is to gather information on shellfishes, like mollusk and crustaceans, particularly on the status of the fisheries. Available technologies, identify gaps and market for the development and management of the shellfish industry, identify strategies for the formulation of a five-year road map for the industry, and prepare a resolution for the promotion of shellfishes as valuable resources.

It is expected that health management and bioldogy of shellfishes will be discussed for guidance of the attending stakeholders in understanding the breeding and grow-out technology that have been developed for shellfishes.

A congregation of stakeholders in the industry, they will workshop on the commercially important species of shellfishes, particularly on the status of the fisheries, broodstock development and management and hatchery techniques, feed quality and nutrition, and culture and post harvest techniques. It will also assess the existing extension services, market and trade promotion being practiced in the shelfffishes industry And to be able to document the best aquaculture practices relative to the shellfish industry. The expected output of the summit include the five-year commodity road map and the resolution for the promotion of shellfishes as valuable resources.

San Pablo City’s Hagdang Bato

             Nobody knew the number of steps it has:   when it was constructed and by whom,   until Mayor Vicente B.
