DOST-CALABARZON, through its Provincial S&T Center in Batangas, recently granted PhP0.3M in funding support to Sampaloc Auto Savings Association (SASA) based in Talisay, Batangas.
SASA, through DOST’s Grant-In-Aid Program, made use of the assistance to acquire a freezer/chiller including a complete set of processing equipment for smoked bangus (milkfish) consisting of work tables, and smoke house and steamer, both with drying racks fashioned from food-grade stainless steel. PSTC-Batangas also facilitated provision to staffs of SASA training on process standardization and waste utilization through the Manufacturing Productivity Extension Program of DOST-TAPI.
Once in full operation and using the newly acquired equipment, the cooperative hopes to improve quality of their processed bangus such as fresh deboned bangus, marinated deboned bangus, and smoked deboned bangus. The higher quality products are targeted to increase the volume of their sales. In addition, SASA hopes to answer the demand for processed fish products to client-resorts operating their businesses along the Taal Lake area.
Furthermore, the Packaging R&D Center of DOST assisted the cooperative in conduct of tests and analyses to determine their products’ nutritional value and shelf-life. It also conceptualized and developed a new label and packaging design for SASA. (DOST-IV-A/AMGuevarra)
