194 Pass in CALABARZON
DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo announces that 1,246 high school students have qualified under the 2011-2012 DOST-SEI (DOST-Science Education Institute) Undergraduate Scholarship Program, or RA 7687. The present number of scholars came from more than 20,000 hopefuls who took the scholarship exam last November 2010 in various testing centers throughout the country. Of these, 846 incoming freshmen are eligible under the Science Scholarship Act of 1994 (RA 7687) or Program B, the government’s science scholarship program for the poor and underprivileged with the remaining 400 students eligible under the DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship or Program A.
In CALABARZON, Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal, regional director of DOST IV-A, reports that out of 1, 893 applicants, qualifiers under RA 7687 total 144 with other incoming freshmen who qualified for Program A totaling 50. He said the top three provinces with the most number of qualifiers, pro rated against the number of examinees, under Programs A and B, are Rizal (43), Quezon (27), and Laguna (55).
Meanwhile, qualifiers from Region IV-A who will enroll under Programs A and B are encouraged to attend the orientation sessions from May 3 to 4, 2011 for Batangas Province to be held at the provincial S&T center in Kumintang, Ilaya, Batangas City. The provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Quezon and Rizal have previously conducted orientation sessions from April 26 to 29, 2011.
Scholars of RA 7687 will receive tuition fee subsidy and other school fees, book allowance, monthly living allowance for 10-11 month duration and more. On the other hand, DOST-SEI Merit scholars will receive the same benefits as the RA 7687 scholars except for a pro-rated monthly stipend depending on their economic status.
The government’s Science Scholarship program was initiated together with the creation of the National Science Development Board, the precursor of the DOST. Starting with only 10 awardees, it has increased yearly until the establishment of Republic Act 7687 or the Science Scholarship Act of 1994. RA 7687 paved the way for a massive scholarship program with the government awarding, at present, more than 1,000 slots to qualified students annually. For 2009, 1,246 slots are being made available for graduate scholars in science and technology.
