DOST IV-A to give out kits soon
DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo recently joined hands with DOH Secretary Enrique Ona in agreeing to nationally roll out half a million more of dengue kits also known as the DOST Mosquito Ovicidal/ Larvicidal (OL) Trap system.
This follows the successful launch of 200,000 kits last February in Tacloban City. DOST, through the Industrial Technology Development Institute, is set to distribute the new batch to 125,000 households nationwide. Secretary Montejo targets distribution of the OL traps from July until December 2011, in time for the rainy season. He said, each recipient household, previously identified by the DOH, will receive free kits consisting of four OL traps and a six month-supply of the organic pellets.
In CALABARZON Region, Eric F. Ocampo, entomologist at the Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD IV), identified two cities in Batangas and three cities in Laguna as dengue hotspots. Thus, Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal, regional director of DOST IV-A, will be distributing 11,200 units of OL traps to 2,800 households in eight barangays in Batangas and Laguna on May 3, 2011. These will be received for Batangas by Mayor Meynardo A. Sabili of Lipa City and Mayor Juan V. Toreja of Ibaan. For Laguna, the dengue kits will be received by Mayor Joaquin M. Chipeco of Calamba City, Mayor Vicente A. Amante of San Pablo City, and Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas of Sta. Rosa City.
Moreover, Secretary Montejo added, that DOST and DOH are also collaborating to enhance the delivery of efficient health care in the country especially to fourth up to sixth class municipalities through the National Telehealth Service Program (NTSP). Secretary Ona explains that NTSP aims to link remote barrios with health specialists through use of information and communication technologies, such as the mobile phone, to facilitate diagnosis of diseases/disorders.
The signed Memorandum of Agreement on the two programs will define the roles and responsibilities of each agency to achieve maximum results that would benefit the people in the communities. (DOST IV-A/JMLazcano/AMGuevarra)
