SAN PABLO CITY, Philippines – An ordinance banning the use of plastic bags and Styrofoam in department stores, supermarkets and food chains will take effect in this city on March 1.
Mayor Vicente Amante and city administrator Loreto Amante said the scheme will greatly help protect the environment as it will prevent the clogging of canals, creeks, rivers and various waterways that usually cause recurrent flooding or flash floods in the city.
From March 1 until August, business establishments in the city should start disposing of their plastic and Styrofoam materials, Amante said. Violators would face imprisonment, cancellation of licenses to operate, and fines.
